About
Nir Oz – a pioneering community in the heart of the Negev, a symbol of national pain and the power of renewal
Kibbutz Nir Oz is located in the western Negev, a short distance from the Gaza Strip border and belongs to the Eshkol Regional Council.
Since its establishment in 1955 by the Nahal nucleus of Hashomer Hatzair, the kibbutz has symbolized a pioneering vision, cooperative living, advanced agriculture and groundbreaking ecological innovation.
Its green spaces, unique botanical garden and multi-generational community systems have transformed it over the years into a place of belonging, mutual support and constant creation in the heart of the desert.
October 7 – The Breaking Point
On October 7, 2023, Nir Oz became the scene of one of the worst pogroms in the history of the Jewish people. Hamas terrorists brutally attacked the kibbutz, murdered and kidnapped 117 members of the community, and entered 97% of the homes, which they looted and burned. Nir Oz was the only settlement to be completely occupied – a fact that made it a clear symbol of the scope of the atrocities and the depth of the defense failure that morning. The event left a deep mark on all levels of the community, from children to the elderly, and etched the name of the kibbutz in national and international memory.
The rehabilitation process and the vision for the future
Out of the destruction, a new reality was born in the past year. After the October Sabbath and about three months of evacuation in a hotel in Eilat, the community largely moved to temporary housing in Kiryat Gat. At this time, and with the necessary caution, a comprehensive rehabilitation process began on the kibbutz, unprecedented in its scope – which is still ongoing in Nir Oz today.
It includes planning and rebuilding the kibbutz, developing educational and cultural institutions, advanced infrastructure, and trauma-sensitive community planning. The Hechalutz neighborhood, currently under construction, is the first swallow in the vision of a renewed community – safe, multi-generational, progressive, and inspiring.
Nir Oz’s vision is to continue to be a living and remembered community in the heart of the Negev, connecting a glorious pioneering past, a deep fracture, and a vision for a safe, equitable, and prosperous future. Nir Oz strives to serve as a national and international symbol of renewal, resilience, and human partnership, while preserving the memory and legacy of its loved ones.
