Here Lived
This is the home of Dina and Shraga Negev.
Shraga was born in Poland, survived the Holocaust, and immigrated to Israel with his family. He joined the Hashomer Hatzair youth movement and was part of the group that founded Kibbutz Nir Oz.
Dina was born on Kibbutz Ein HaShofet. After completing her army service, she came to Nir Oz to do a year of public service. Here she met Shraga. They married and had four children: Omer, Adi, Ido, and Inbar.
Shraga worked mainly in agriculture, while Dina worked in the Nir Lat factory. They took loving care of their home and nurtured the surrounding gardens, which became a well-known gathering space for the community. Kibbutz members would gather around the tabun, the traditional outdoor oven, baking together the finest homemade pita bread. Later on, they built a vacation home in a renovated bus, which they set up alongside the kibbutz reservoir. Dina would swim there, while Shraga read and listened to music, and the two would share delicious family meals. They also enjoyed traveling together throughout Israel.
In 2015, Dina passed away.
October 7th
On October 7, Shraga was at home with his daughter Inbar, her partner Amichai, and their young children Noga and Noam. When the sirens sounded, they entered the safe room and stayed there until 6:30 p.m. During those endless hours, they clung to the door handle, holding it shut to prevent the terrorists – who had broken into their home – from entering the safe room.
In the evening, they were rescued from their home and evacuated to the kibbutz kindergarten, along with others who had survived the day’s atrocities. They remained there until it was possible to safely evacuate them from the kibbutz the following evening.
What happened since
Shraga and his family were first taken to Eilat with the other kibbutz members.
When the kibbutz members were relocated from there to Karme Gat, Shraga felt that city life wasn’t for him. Today he lives in Kibbutz Nachsholim. Shraga spends two days a week in Nir Oz, where he continues his work in irrigation. In addition, he continues to travel around the country, appreciative of every moment.
