Here Lived
In this home lived the Baum family: Vicky, Simon, their children Lior and Eden, and their dog Luna. The family came to Nir Oz in 2009, almost 16 years ago, and integrated into the community. Vicky was the lead caregiver at the Kibbutz children’s house, and she testifies: “Our children grew up happily in the pastoral kibbutz, until October 7th.”
October 7th
On that Shabbat, everything changed. The family was together in the safe room for 12 hours. Terrorists didn’t enter their home, but their patio became the terrorists’ command center, where they treated their injured and made decisions. The Baum family remained confined in the safe room, as outside there were shouts in Arabic, gunfire, rockets falling, and grenades, and the smell of burning and death in the air. Feelings of fear, anxiety, and helplessness, a sense of the end of the world.
What Happened Since
The entire family survived and moved to live together with survivors of the community in Karme Gat.
